Sending Students and Mentors to Technical Conferences

Sending Students and Mentors to Technical Conferences

John Cavazos, University of Delaware, cavazos@cis.udel.edu

This program gives support to underrepresented students (as defined by the National Science Foundation) in CSE who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and, when eligible, to their mentors, to participate in and attend leading technical conferences. In this context, "technical conferences" means conferences in specialized areas of research in the area of computing (e.g., ISCA and HPCA in computer architecture or SC in high performance computing) that are sponsored, co-sponsored, or in-cooperation with one of the CDC supporting societies (ACM, CRA or IEEE/CS).

The goal of this program is to increase the number of underrepresented students participating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) research, with a particular focus on the area of computing. A way of accomplishing this goal is to assist faculty and students with gaining expertise in new and desired areas of computing and having opportunities to network with researchers in these fields. Hence, this CDC Project provides support to help students and faculty mentors attend specialized technical conferences, which often serve as catalysts to research. This project is targeting student and faculty mentor pairs that would otherwise not be able to attend such conferences (lack individual and institutional means for attending the conferences).

Up to $1,000 is available to support each student. When eligible, the mentor can receive up to $1,000 in support.

Mentors/Departments: Download a flyer (pdf file, 255 KB) to display at your school or send to interested students.

In order to apply for conference support, students and mentors should download an application (MS Word document) at one of the following links, complete the application, and e-mail it to the address at the bottom of the document:

Note: Students should make sure that applications are submitted at least three months before the event they want to attend.

Following the conference, students and mentors are each asked to complete a form detailing the conference experience. Links to the forms will appear below.
